To update my previous post, My Nomination for Stupid Educator of the Year, I want to share that it was announced today that the students will get their diplomas after all – but no apologies from the school as of yet.

The latest decision was influenced by the Illinois State Board of Education “which has said it cannot support the district’s decorum policy because it makes students responsible for behavior they cannot control.”

Pure and simple. Don’t punish someone for what they themselves can’t control. And while you’re at it, try not to punish kids at their own celebratory ceremony for something as benign as family and friends just showing pride and joy! If you want to establish decorum, come up with a policy that makes sense – one that can be enforced fairly, reasonably, and evenly.
